Sudershan cools down frayed tempers

Sheela Bhatt in New Delhi | July 11, 2003 22:03 IST

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief K Sudershan played the role of a peacemaker between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad at the Ram Mandir Andolan Samiti meeting on Friday.

While addressing the meeting of the samiti he said, "Sarkar ki bhi kuch majbooriyan hai (The government also has some constraints)."

Sudershan also appraised the meeting about his talks with Vajpayee on the Ayodhya issue.

Last week VHP leader Ashok Singhal had asked Vajpayee to resign for his 'failure' to bring in a law for the construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Sudershan assured the VHP leaders, and more than 20 mahants, that VHP's role in the Ayodhya issue and its participation in its solution will be ensured.

He gave his blessings to the temple movement, but also reminded the agitated saints that Vajpayee government is not enjoying a majority in Parliament.

At the meeting, VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Acharya Giriraj Kishore decided to form a committee to evolve the strategy for the mass-movement programme, which is similar to the Sankalp Yatra, planned by the outfit.

A committee has been given the task to 'accelerate the agitation' for the temple.

The meeting, according to a saint from Munger, Bihar, also set a deadline before the Bharatiya Janata Party to bring a legislation in Parliament. The deadline will be over after charmasi (monsoon), he said.

It was decided that instead of the VHP workers and Ramsevaks, the new movement will be lead by saints.

RSS general secretary Mohan Bhagwat and joint secretary in-charge of the BJP, Madan Das Devi, and VHP's international secretary Pravin Togadia also attended the meeting.
