Forty-seven passengers of the Jammu-bound Amarnath Express were on Monday injured when the train hit a truck parked at an unmanned crossing about 7km from Gorakhpur. It is feared that some persons may even have lost their limbs in the accident.

Of the injured, ten were discharged after first aid while 22 were admitted to the railway hospital in Gorakhpur.

Fifteen were admitted to the district hospital.

However, reports received at the state police headquarters in Lucknow said ten people may have lost their limbs in the incident. The reports also indicated that the number of injured may be much higher, but exact details were not available.

Earlier, Divisional Railway Manager V K Dutt had said the 5087 Gorakhpur-Jammu Tawi Express hit the truck at the crossing near Domingarh Station resulting in injuries to passengers, who were standing near the doors.

"There is no damage to the train, which will proceed on its onward journey," he said.

Chief Public Relations Officer (North Eastern Railway) Manoj Kumar Singh said the truck was commissioned by the railways for work relating to doubling of tracks in the region.
