Over 94,000 pilgrims registered for Amarnath yatra

Over 94,000 pilgrims out of a targeted 112,000 have so far registered themselves for the annual Amarnath yatra beginning on July 12, official sources in Jammu said.

The sources said 94,720 pilgrims were registered for the yatra in Lidder Valley of Anantnag district in south Kashmir since the registration began 10 days ago.

In the next few days the quota of 112,000 would become exhausted, the sources said, adding there existed an additional quota of 10,000 people.

Last year, 110,793 people visited the cave shrine, the sources said adding a record 173,334 pilgrims visited in 2000, followed by 149,920 in 1998.

This year one more route through Baltal has been thrown open for pilgrimage apart from the usual Pahalgam-Chandanwari main route, the tourism department said.

Besides, 3,500 pilgrims would be allowed to trek to the cave shrine from Jammu each day, they said.
