Jamaat leader released in Kashmir
May 09, 2003 18:14 IST
Continuing the process of releasing political detainees, the Jammu and Kashmir government has released a Jamaat-e-Islami leader Qazi Ahadullah, All Parties Hurriyat Conference sources said in Srinagar on Friday.
Qazi, who is the second political leader to be released in five days, reached home last evening, they said.
On May 3, J&K Liberation Front leader Noor Mohammad Khalwal was released after 12 years in detention.
Senior Hurriyat leaders Mohammad Yaseen Malik and Khalil Mohammad Khalil and other prominent workers met Ahadullah and hailed his release.
Expressing concern over the condition of detainees lodged in jails and joint interrogation centres, the Hurriyat alleged that they were being ill-treated under detention.
In a statement, the Hurriyat claimed that its activists including Mukhtar Ahmad Sofi, Mohammad Yousuf Mujahid, Hakeem Abdul Rashid and Mohammad Abdullah Gazali have been undergoing imprisonment despite expiry of their detention periods under the Public Safety Act. They have also been granted bail in all the cases against them, it claimed.
