Kids of killed militants to be rehabilitated: Mufti

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar | May 20, 2003 03:49 IST

Children of militants killed by security forces will be provided with support for their education and rehabilitation, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has said.

The children will be included in the welfare schemes of the Rehabilitation Council for Victims of Militancy.

The council was set up to provide assistance for physical, psychological and economic rehabilitation of the victims of militancy with special focus on widows, orphans, handicapped and aged persons, whose bread-winner is killed or incapacitated as a result of terrorist attacks.

Though the council was set up in 1996, no meeting was held for the last five years.

Mufti said a conference of non-governmental organisations will be convened to evolve a mechanism for effective implementation of the schemes of the council.

"A comprehensive survey will be conducted to ascertain the authentic number of victims and the affected areas to facilitate their rehabilitation priority. Adequate funds would be arranged for the purpose," he said.

Mufti appealed to corporate houses, philanthropists, NGOs and other organisations, and chief ministers of other states to contribute to the corpus.

"The Congress chief ministers coming to Srinagar for their conclave will be requested for such help. We will also request the state legislators and MPs for raising contributions for the council to give much needed thrust to its rehabilitation effort," he said.
