TN govt sacks 587 employees for July strike
November 18, 2003 01:44 IST
Sticking to its tough posture, the Tamil Nadu government on Monday night sacked 587 of its employees and initiated punitive action against 2,218 while reinstating them for participating in a strike in July this year. Only 132 employees escaped punishment, official sources said.
Of the 587 dismissed, 530 were from the secretariat and the remaining from other offices in Chennai.
Of the reinstated employees, 2,162 lost one increment while 56 were demoted.
The government order was issued on the basis of the findings of a three-member judges panel, which went into the dismissal order by the government in July 2003.
The panel was constituted by the Madras high court on a directive from the Supreme Court. It had given its verdict in respect of 2,937 employees and was expected to give its recommendations with regard to another 2,000 odd employees soon.
