A three-member Jammu and Kashmir Police team of roller skaters has staked its claim for an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records by scaling the world's highest motorable road in the Ladakh frontier region of the state.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Nasir Ahmed and Sub-Inspectors Rajesh Anand and Sanjeev Mahendru on Sunday traversed the 40-kilometre stretch from Leh (11500 feet from sea level) to Khardung-la (18382 feet from sea level) to stake their claim in the record books, Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh, T Phunsog said.

The skaters reached the destination in over nine hours with team leader Anand finishing the journey in a record timing of nine hours and 15 minutes. Mahendru took nine hours and 48 minutes, while Ahmed clocked 10 hours and 50 minutes.

Anand, a former national team captain, had led the Indian team to a bronze medal in the 1987 Asian Roller Hockey Championship held in New Delhi while Mahendru had dominated the speed skating event as he created a hat trick of wins at the national championship between 1985-87 before joining the J&K police force in 1992.

Ahmed was also a member of the Jammu and Kashmir roller hockey team.
