The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday took over the Hazratbal and Charar-e-Sharief shrines and the entire property of the Muslim Aquaf Trust headed by former chief minister Farooq Abdullah alleging financial mismanagement.

The two shrines were sealed and the Trust office inside the National Conference headquarters at Nawa-i-Subah, official sources said. Three other shrines - at Pakherpora, Dasteil Sahib and Makhdoom Sahib - were also taken over.

The decision to take over properties of the Trust was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on a day the National Conference was observing the death anniversary of its founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

The trust also controls a lot of property in the state.

Reacting to the move, National Conference president Omar Abdullah accused the government of 'targeting the NC and trying to make a deliberate attempt to remove the name of Sheikh Abdullah from the (history of the) state'.

"No one can rewrite history as per his whims and fancies," Abdullah said adding this was the most 'gruesome and the real face of the Mufti's healing touch'.
