Mamata and crowd bring down dais

August 09, 2004 18:40 IST

Nationalist Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and party leader P A Sangma on Monday escaped unhurt when the dais, from where she was addressing a meeting at Gopiballabdhpur in West Midnapore district, collapsed injuring three others.

Banerjee and Sangma were on the dais along with others when it collapsed, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Chayan Mukherjee told PTI.

"Mamata Banerjee and Sangma are unhurt, but three persons received injuries," he said.

Mukherjee said the accident occurred due to overcrowding on the stage. Party sources said the rains had loosened the soil, which led to the stage collapsing.

Banerjee was on a visit to Gopiballabhpur to register her party's protest against the conciliation board bill, starvation deaths in the district among other issues. West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Vineet Goel said that Banerjee was now resting at the Kendubari Forest guest house.
