Panel views PM's 1992 Ayodhya speech

February 09, 2004 18:02 IST

The Liberhan Commission on Monday viewed a videocassette, supplied by the Uttar Pradesh police, showing Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee addressing a rally in Lucknow a day before the Babri Masjid was demolished.

The cassette showed Vajpayee saying that he was not aware what was going to happen the next day, December 6, 1992.

He, according to the cassette, even said he wanted to go to Ayodhya, but was stopped by other leaders.

Vajpayee was seen giving a different interpretation to the Supreme Court order allowing karseva. He said though no construction was allowed during the karseva, the court had put no bar on bhajan and kirtans, which would require a tent to be erected so that people could take shelter from the cold.

The cassette also showed Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani's address the same rally.
