World's longest saree unveiled

July 16, 2004 20:48 IST

In a bid to make an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records, a 700-feet-long silk saree was unveiled in Chennai on Friday.

The silken masterpiece depicts the pride of Pallava architecture -- Mahabalipuram Shore Temple -- surrounded by lashing sea waves and wonderful images from the famous 'Arjuna's Penance', the world's largest bas-relief.

The saree stretches twice to the height of Statue of Liberty in New York. It took more than three months with six master weavers, supported by 16 craftsmen, working day and night, to produce this masterpiece in silk.

The previous Guinness record of a saree is 121 metre (396 ft.11 inches) in length.
