Amarnath yatra remains suspended; 34,000 pilgrims stranded

July 31, 2004 11:35 IST

The Amarnath Yatra remained suspended for the second consecutive day on Saturday due to inclement weather, leaving over 34,000 pilgrims stranded between Pahalgam and the cave shrine in south Kashmir.

The yatra was suspended on Friday owing to bad weather and heavy rains in Jammu and in south Kashmir Himalayas, official sources said.

A meeting of senior police and civil officers under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Pawan Kotwal was held on Friday to review the yatra arrangements.

The deputy commissioner said the pilgrims will not be able to leave Jammu due to the unfavourable weather and directed the officials to make necessary arrangements for the stranded pilgrims.
