March 04, 2004 20:09 IST

The Congress on Thursday expressed unhappiness over the hurried appointment of former CBI director P C Sharma as a member of the National Human Rights Commissions soon after the dissolution of the Lok Sabha.

Party spokesperson S Jaipal Reddy told reporters in Delhi that Sharma had 'connived' with the government both on the Babri Masjid demolition case as well as on the investigation into the Tehelka expose.

In the Babri Masjid case, the CBI had tried to save Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani by dropping criminal charges against him. In case of Tehelka, Sharma had conspired with the guilty and initiated action against one of the reporters involved in the expose, Reddy alleged.

He said the NHRC chairman has expressed reservations over Sharma's appointment.
