Olympic medallist to the rescue of martyr's family

October 01, 2004 18:22 IST

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Friday directed the government to allot a piece of land in Lucknow to the family of the late Major Amiya Tripathi to set up a petrol pump.

Major Tripathi was killed fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir on May 25. The move came after Rajvardhan Singh Rathore, Olympic silver medallist and a close friend of Major Tripathi, spoke to Yadav on Thursday seeking help for his friend's family.

The Chief Minister will also meet Major Tripathi's father to assure him of the government's support, the press release said. The distressed family members told Rathore only recently about the demise so as not to disturb him during his preparations for the Olympics. Rathore and Major Tripathi had been good friends from their days together in the National Defence Academy.
