The Supreme Court of India will give its ruling on the writ petitions filed by two of the convicts in the Parliament attack case on Thursday afternoon.

Shaukat Hussain Guru and Mohammad Afzal of Jaish-e-Mohammed, a terrorist outfit floated by Maulana Masood Azhar, had been sentenced to death by the trial court and the Delhi high court had upheld the verdict.

While the death sentence of S A R Geelani, professor of Zakir Hussain College of Delhi University was quashed by the court and he was set free along with Afsan Guru, wife of Shaukat Guru by the high court, a division bench of the Supreme Court comprising of Justice P V Reddy and Justice P P Neolkar heard the petitions against the order of the Delhi high court.
 
While Guru and Afzal had appealed against the high court order, the Delhi police also moved the Supreme Court against the order for restoring death sentence in the case of Geelani and a jail term for Afsan Guru.

• The Attack on Parliament

The trial court had given death sentence to the accused persons under Sections 120 B, 121, 121A, 122, 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code and under Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act to Geelani, Afzal and Shaukat Guru.

All the accused persons were arrested by the Delhi police after five Pakistani terrorists belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammed attacked Parliament on December 13, 2001 in which a number of security personnel including men belonging to the watch and ward staff of Parliament laid down their lives to protect Parliament.

The five terrorists were later gunned down by the security forces.
