Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Sushma Swaraj on Saturday demanded the resignation of Congress president and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi [Images] in the wake of latest disclosures in the Volcker episode.
Miss Swaraj told UNI that after the Volcker report and the latest disclosures by Indian ambassador to Croatia Aniel Mathrani, Ms Gandhi has emerged as a prime accused in the episode and therefore she should tender her resignation.
She also accused Sonia of trying to sweep the issue under the carpet.
Meanwhile, refusing to comment on disciplinary action against BJP firebrand leader Uma Bharti, Miss Swaraj said the party had given 72 hours to the fiery Sadhvi to reply to the notice and only after that the BJP Parliamentary Board will take a final decision on the issue.
She denied any weakness in the party's leadership and said the BJP was as strong as it had been and all the decisions within the party were taken collectively, adding the recent crises in some states were not a big issue.
She also flayed the UPA chairperson over the Women's Reservation Bill, saying despite being the leader of the UPA, Sonia could not persuade her allies like Lalu Prasad and the bill was yet to be given the nod by the cabinet.
