The United Progressive Alliance government and Congress party on Tuesday rejected the opposition's demand for resignation of Sonia Gandhi [Images] as National Advisory Council chairperson, in the wake of allegations in the Volcker issue. The party has termed them as 'mischievious and motivated'.

While Congress spokesman Anand Sharma rejected the demand outright at the AICC briefing, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, speaking separately to reporters, said that the government was 'not bothered' by the opposition move at all.

Dasmunsi noted that this was not the first time the opposition was demanding the resignation of the Congress president but had done so on several occasions earlier.

"They made the demand when Gandhi became the Congress President, the second time when she became the leader of the opposition and the third time, Sushma Swaraj said she would tonsure her head if Gandhi became prime minister", he recalled.
