The customary Republic Day reception hosted by the governor has been cancelled this year in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the devastation caused in the state by the December 26 tsunamis.
Close to 8,000 people died and property worth millions of rupees was destroyed when killer tsunami waves lashed 13 coastal districts of the state.
Nagapattinam was the worst affected with over 6,000 dead.
