A top ranking officer of Jammu and Kashmir [Images] police said that there has been increase in the number of fidayeen attacks in the state in last couple of weeks.

Talking to rediff.com from Srinagar [Images], Inspector General (Administration) K Rajinderan said there have been intelligence reports indicating that there would be sudden spurt in the terrorist activities in the valley around Independence Day.

"The two attacks in Lal Chowk in Srinagar and one in Kupwara seemed to be well coordinate attacks by the militants," he said.

In the Lal Chowk fidayeen attack, six journalists, including a cameraman of Zee Television were injured. Two army jawans and a civilian were also injured according to the police sources.

While the media channels claimed that the fidayeen attackers could be more than two, with fire coming from different directions, police officials said there were just two fidayeen holed up in Gujarat hotel in Lal Chowk.

"It is possible that someone is giving them covering fire. But in a situation like this a fire from security forces also looks like fire from the terrorists. We would get them soon," said Rajinderan.
