Two women were killed and 40 persons, including 11 school children, were injured in a grenade explosion in the busy city centre of Lal Chowk on Thursday afternoon.

Unidentified militants hurled the grenade on the crowded road outside Tyndale Biscoe School for boys at around 1445 hours, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Srinagar [Images] range H K Lohia said.

Girls from adjacent Mallinson's School were also injured.

The blast took place when students of both schools were leaving for home, he said.

The injured were shifted to various hospitals.

On Wednesday morning, a car bomb killed one and injured 35 in Srinagar.

While militant outfit Al-Nasreen had claimed responsibility for Wednesday's car bomb attack, no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack.
