Bharatiya Janata Party national secretary Bandaru Dattatreya on Monday said the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's 'gameplan' of fielding the widow of deceased legislator S S Thirunavukkarassu at Kancheepuram and the son of murdered MLA K Sudarsanam at Gummidipoondi had resulted in the party's victory in the bypolls.

AIADMK's T Mythili and K Vijayakumar won the seats at Kancheepuram and Gummidipoondi respectively.

"It is a sympathy vote," Dattatreya told PTI from Madurai.

He also alleged misuse of official machinery during the bypolls by the AIADMK.

It was also a vote against the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre for its 'unhelpful attitude' to the demands of Tamil Nadu, Dattatreya added.

People in the state had developed 'apathy' towards the UPA government, he said.
