The United Nations on Monday said it had not yet received any letter from either the ruling Congress party or the opposition in India seeking information on the Volcker Committee report that named union Minister K Natwar Singh and the party in its inquiry report on Iraqi oil-for-food programme.

"The world body has not as yet received any letter from either the Congress or the opposition seeking further information on the panel's report," a UN spokesperson said, adding that all the documents were still with the Committee.

She declined to comment on how the world body would deal with the letters once it received the them.

The spokesperson said it was for the Volcker Committee to co-operate with any inquiry that the Indian government might conduct at this point of time.

A senior official said since the documents on the basis of which Natwar Singh's name was listed are still with Committee, any further information should at present be available from the panel.

• Congress asks for details

It was not a criminal inquiry and hence further investigations by national authorities would be necessary to establish whether any wrongdoing was committed by an official or an entity, he added.

The official denied that Secretary-General Kofi Annan had tried to influence the inquiry to water down the Volcker committee findings against him. No immediate comment was available from the Volcker panel.
