Dismissing the recent spurt in militant strikes as a bid by ultras to show their presence, the Army on Monday said its 'counter-infiltration grid' is in place to thwart their attempts to sneak into Jammu and Kashmir [Images].

"The Army is effectively foiling attempts by militants to sneak into the Kashmir valley from across the border," Chief of Army Staff General J J Singh said.

He said the ultras would continue infiltration attempts, but 'our effort is to scuttle their plans. There are some places along the Line of Control where infiltration is possible as militants can take advantage of the topography and difficult terrain'.

He said infiltration has been controlled to a large extent and the 'data available with us till this month shows that there is no need to worry'.

"I don't see reason to get panicky," he said.

The militants thought that they had lost relevance and went for the recent strikes to remind the people about their presence, he said.

"Militancy will die down once there is no support to them from the public. I think the people of Kashmir have resolved to march towards peace, prosperity and development and give a new shape to their lives," the Army chief said.

Asked about the militant infrastructure on the other side of the LoC, he said, "The reports with us reveal militant infrastructure has also suffered badly due to the October quake but how much is very difficult to say."
