After experiencing sporadic aftershocks in the aftermath of the October 8 massive earthquake, Islamabad and other areas in Pakistan had a quiet night with Meteorological department officials saying strong tremors may ease by Monday. The critical period following Saturday's earthquake would come to an end Monday night and there is no threat of a high magnitude earthquake in the near future, Director General Metreological Department Qamar Zaman said in Islamabad on Monday.
A chain of low intensity aftershocks may continue for three to four weeks but the frequency would gradually decrease, he told PTV.
He said the biggest aftershocks occurred on Sunday and measured 5.3 on the Richter scale. After a major earthquake, occurrence of aftershocks is a normal pattern, he said, urging people not to panic. He said occurrence of aftershocks is good in the context that possibility of another major earthquake is averted.
Islamabad, Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and Northwest Frontier Province, experienced over 145 tremors of minor as well as heavy intensity after the earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale rocked several areas in Pakistan on October 8.
