The Army arrived in Chennai Firday night to rescue some people marooned by rain waters in the Pulianthope area of north Chennai, one of the worst affected low-lying localities in the heavy rains.

Over 120 personnel of Military Engineering Group will bail out the flood waters, which stood chest-high in the slum area.

Already the city corporation officials had moved most of the residents to safety, but could not reach all places.

Pulianthope is one of the few low-lying areas in the city where waterlogging, caused by Thursday's rains, is yet to be cleared.

The army is joining the rescue efforts following a request from the state government.
