Dismissing allegations that his nephew was a drug addict, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gopinath Munde claimed on Saturday that Rahul Mahajan and Vivek Moitra were poisoned.
"The medical report has made it clear that Rahul has not taken any drugs, even cocaine. I think they were poisoned," Munde told reporters after visiting his 31-year-old nephew in Delhi's Apollo Hospital, where he was admitted early Friday morning.
Asked if he suspected anyone, Munde said it was for the police to conduct an 'impartial and detailed inquiry', considering all aspects to ascertain the truth. He also ruled out any political angle into the incident.
Munde said police was still investigating the cocaine angle even though a medical report has 'proved' otherwise. "I have faith in them, but I feel that they have to change the angle of investigation," he said.
Blaming the media for 'continuously' reporting that the duo had taken drugs, Munde said the tests done at the Apollo Hospital had made it clear that there were no traces of drugs in Rahul's blood and urine samples. Even Maitra's autopsy, he said, suggests poisoning.
Munde, who is married to the late Pramod Mahajan's sister and was closely associated with him, said, "I was saying from the beginning that I personally knew that Rahul won't take drugs. I know him from childhood."
Asked why BJP leaders were not visiting Rahul, Munde said party chief Rajnath Singh has already visited him.
