The Delhi government on Wednesday convened a meeting of the board of directors of Apollo Hospital to acquaint itself with all aspects of the Rahul Mahajan drug abuse case even as it expressed "unhappiness" over the hospital's media handling in the matter.

"The meeting was to be held 10 days later. However, in view of the bad publicity and criticism received by the hospital in which Delhi government has a stake while handling the Rahul Mahajan case, the meeting was held on Wednesday," Chief Secretary R Naranayaswami, who chaired the three-hour long meeting, told reporters.

The meeting was attended by Apollo vice president Pratap Reddy and a number of doctors who attended to Rahul during his nearly five-day stay in the hospital.

The board of directors was particularly unhappy over the manner in which a press conference was convened by the hospital to present the high profile case to the media.

The meeting is understood to have felt that regular medical bulletins should have been enough and the situation was unnecessarily complicated by holding press conferences.

Sources said the board, however, took a favourable view of the tests conducted on Rahul to ascertain if he had taken any narcotic substance, taking note of the fact that the hospital had on its own sent samples to a private lab for an independent view.
