A passenger has been arrested at the Chennai airport trying to pass off restricted very high frequency transceivers and similar items as cameras, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials said on Saturday.
The items seized from the passenger included electronic goods, navigational and marine communication equipment like marine transceivers and navigators worth Rs 11 lakh, Additional Director General, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Dr P Babu, said in a release.
On a tip-off, the DRI officers intercepted the passenger who had arrived from Singapore on Friday.
The passenger had stated that the goods were cameras worth Rs 1.25 lakh. Some of the equipment that were found required licenses as per the Foreign Trade Policy.
During interrogation, the passenger stated that he had procured the goods from Singapore to be handed over to a Chennai-based person and he was not aware of any other details.
He had also made about 70 trips to Singapore since 2002 and has brought electronic goods for the person, he said.
