The Calcutta High Court said on Thursday that it would not be able to take up cases relating to Nandigram police action at present as the Supreme Court had asked for copies of all documents relating to the several petitions in this regard.

A division bench comprising Justice P C Ghose and Justice B Somadder said that the High Court had received a letter from the apex court seeking copies of the documents of all the 11 petitions and as such it would not be able to take up the matter at present.

However, until any order from the Supreme Court was received with regard to the Nandigram cases, the matter would not be formally adjourned, the bench said on a query by senior counsel Kalyan Banerjee who is representing one of the petitioners.

The bench, before which the cases had earlier been listed for hearing, had on April 18 adjourned the hearing of the matter and directed that the cases would come up for hearing today before the regular bench headed by Chief Justice S S Nijjer, who had directed the CBI to enquire into the Nandigram police action on March 14 that claimed 14 lives and left over 140 persons injured.

The Chief Justice was, however, indisposed and the entire matter could be moved before his court after he joined, Justice Ghose told counsel Banerjee.
