The Opposition Telugu Desam Party on Monday petitioned Andhra Pradesh Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari and sought his intervention in the wake of "the total breakdown of law and order in Andhra Pradesh."

Speaking to mediapersons after presenting a memorandum to the governor at the Raj Bhavan, former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu [Images] said that "the state's constitutional machinery has broken down and there is total collapse of law and order."

"This chief minister (Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy) is not responding to grave situations like the ones caused by the twin bomb blasts in the city. Despite the recurrence of such serious incidents, he has failed to act. It is unfortunate that he refuses to accept moral responsibility for his government's lapses, which have led to incidents like the recent ones," he added.

"We have brought all these issues to the governor's notice. We told him that there is a grave threat to the safety of the people if this government continues in office. We urged the governor to intervene and ensure the protection of law and order in the state. This government has failed to perform its basic duty," Naidu said.

He added that the TDP did not support the bandh call given by the Bharatiya Janata Party "as it only adds to the hardships faced by the people."

However, his party will organise protests and dharnas across the state on Tuesday to highlight the failure of the Congress government to tackle the terrorist menace.

Naidu also accused the government of not taking any steps after the Mecca Masjid blast and subsequent police firings claimed 14 lives in Hyderabad on May 18.

The State government had handed over the Mecca blast case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.  

The inability of the CBI and the state police agencies to nab the culprits behind the Mecca blast has led to the twin bomb blasts that claimed 40 lives in Hyderabad on Saturday, claimed the TDP.
