Accusing the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre of failing to implement majority of the schemes under the Common Minimum Programme, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Friday pulled out of the UPA and withdrew its support to the government.
In a resolution adopted at its regional conference in Coimbatore, the party, which was giving unconditional outside support, said that in the last three years, the government had failed to implement any of the 17 demands put forth by the party.
MDMK demands included constitutional amendment for state autonomy, linking of national and peninsular rivers and to declare all languages in the 8th schedule as official languages. The party has four parliamentarians, of which two -- L Ganesan and Gingee Ramachandran -- have split and sought separate seats in the Lok Sabha. The party, led by Vaiko, has two Parliamentarians in Dr C Krishnan and S Selvaraj now.
The Centre has 'failed' to take any steps to solve Tamil Nadu farmers' problems, by linking rivers, particularly peninsular rivers, despite assuring that priority will be given to it, the resolution said.
The Congress-led government also 'failed' to prevent the 'injustice' meted out to Tamil Nadu by neighbouring states on the vexatious Cauvery, Mullaperiyar and Palar river issues, the party pointed out.
The Centre's economic policy was totally in favour of multinationals and monopoly traders, neglecting middle income and poor people, the party alleged.
