Against the backdrop of the attack by supporters of his elder son M K Azhagiri on the office of a newspaper which published a survey favouring his younger son as the future head of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday night said dynastic politics has no room in his party.
There was no room for dynastic rule in a democratic party like DMK and the family legacy would not be allowed in the party, he said in a statement.
Karunanidhi strongly condemned the attack on the office of Tamil daily Dinakaran, in which three people were killed, and said the government would take "firm action" against those responsible for the incident.
Karunanidhi, who is critical of opinion polls, said, "In the name of an opinion poll, the offices of a paper have been attacked and three lives have been taken away from us, which can never be brought back."
"Nobody should make attempts to create a rift among partymen on the basis of opinion polls," he said.
The chief minister said he never accepted attacks on the media as he had complete faith in the freedom of the press. He also announced a solatium of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
