'93 blasts: 7 convicts pay up Rs 4.85 lakh in fine

Out of the 32 convicts who have been sentenced in 1993 Mumbai blasts case till Friday, seven have paid their fine, which adds up to Rs 4.85 lakh, court sources said.

The highest amount was paid by Sharif Parkar, who, apart from the 14 years jail term, was asked to cough up Rs 3 lakh in fine on various counts by the special TADA court on Thursday.

Sources said Parkar's family deposited Rs 3.25 lakh in cash on Friday morning. That included Rs 25,000, the fine imposed on his son Mujib Parkar who was sentenced to five years' rigorous imprisonment.

Sharif is expected to be released soon, as he has been in custody for over 14 years as an undertrial. He was convicted for aiding in landing of arms and explosives at Shekhadi coast in Raigad in February 1993, prior to blasts.

Similarly, Sarfaraz Phanse is also expected to be free soon. Others who have paid up the fine are: Manzoor Ahmed Sayed, Mohd Hanif Shaikh, Sharif Adhikari, Sarfaraz Phanse, and Yusuf Khan.

Two of the convicts, namely Rashid Alware and Sharif Adhikari, have already been released as they had spent their jail terms as undertrials.
