The mysterious death of Rizwanur Rehman in Kolkata may turn out to be a suicide case as the Central Bureau of Investigation is likely to charge a close relative of his wife Priyanka with abetment to it besides recommending departmental action against some Kolkata police officials.

As the probe into the death of Rehman, a computer graphics teacher, was reaching its final stage, CBI sources claimed that it looked like a case of suicide and someone had definitely forced him to take this extreme step.

Without naming the person, the CBI said it had zeroed down on a close relative of Priyanka. The agency would be pressing abetment to suicide case against the relative.

There have been clear indications that this relative of the girl had allegedly used pressure tactics to drive Rehman to such a stage where he took the extreme step of committing suicide.

Last month, the CBI had registered a case against Rizwanur's father-in-law Ashok Todi, and others under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

The CBI checked the call records and examined all the family members of the victim as well as Priyanka, including Todi, during its month-long investigations.

Besides the friends of the deceased, the police officials who allegedly had pressurised Rehman and Priyanka to separate were also examined. The CBI sources said that the agency would recommend Regular Departmental Action against two Kolkata policemen for alleged intimidation at the behest of the girl's influential family.

The CBI had formed a special team, headed by a Joint Director, which was mandated to go into the circumstances leading to Rehman's death.

The Calcutta High Court had directed the CBI to go into the circumstances of the unnatural death of the youth whose body was found on the rail tracks near Dum Dum on September 21.

Rehman's mother Kishwar Jahan and elder brother Rukbanur had moved the High Court seeking a CBI inquiry into his death, claiming they did not have faith in any probe conducted by any state agency.

Senior CBI officials said that the prime aim of the agency was "to comply with the High Court order in the cause of justice and complete the investigation in the quickest, transparent and objective manner".

Rehman's mysterious death, following his marriage to Priyanka on August 18, had sparked a national outcry.

A medical board set up to examine the postmortem report of Rehman had said it was unable to ascertain whether it was a case of suicide, murder or homicide.
