Cases have been registered in Coimbatore against former Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament Ram Vilas Vedanti for his alleged directive against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for his anti-Ram remarks, police said on Thursday.

The Crime Branch registered the cases on Wednesday night on the complaint of S Jayakumar, president of Coimbatore District Kalaignar Tamil Peravai, police said.

The cases were registered under IPC 153 and 153-A (promoting enmity between two groups or religions) IPC 505-b and 505-c (spreading rumours) and 506 clause II of IPC (threatening life), they said.

The Chennai police had also registered a case against him following a complaint by a city resident on September 24.

Vedanti has denied that he issued a directive to "behead" Karunanidhi for his alleged anti-Ram remarks.
