Jammu woke up to a tense morning on Saturday as the Army was called in to help the administration in maintaining law and order after violent protests over the Amarnath land row.

The Army was called in Jammu city and other curfew bound areas of the district and continues to remain deployed along with police and paramilitary forces, a spokesman said.

The Army was deployed in the adjoining district of Samba since Friday evening, in the wake of violence here in which two persons died and eight others were injured when the police opened fire to control a mob.

The protesters also burnt 14 houses in Khour area of the border tehsil of Akhnoor.

Over 30 people, including seven policemen, were also injured in other incidents of stepped-up violence in Jammu and Samba districts.

The civil authorities sought army assistance, as protesters demanding cancellation of the revoked land transfer order to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, defied curfew and clashed with security forces at several places.

Governor N N Vohra and leaders of several political parties have asked people in Jammu region to maintain peace and calm.

The appeal was made by party leaders at the Raj Bhawan in Srinagar [Images] on Friday evening.
