The army on Tuesday asserted that the situation in poll-bound Jammu and Kashmir [Images] was under check and it will provide a peaceful environment for holding elections in the state.

"We hope (that) we will provide a peaceful environment for elections (in Jammu and Kashmir) that are taking place," Army chief General Deepak Kapoor, who arrived on a two-day visit to the state today, told a news channel.

Reacting to a question on the security situation in the state, General Kapoor said, "The situation in Jammu and Kashmir is well under check".

The Army chief is in the valley to dedicate various projects to the people of the state, which were completed under Operation Sadbhavana.

He dedicated a model village to the people, developed by the Army, in the remote Uri tehsil of Baramulla district near the LoC.

Gwalan village, which was devastated in the October 2005 earthquake, was adopted by the Army and declared as a model village. The new village has almost all modern facilities including schools and computers.

Several top Army commanders including Chief of Northern Command Lieutenant General Bhardwaj and General officer commander of 15 corps of the Army were present during the occasion.
