Atif Ameen, the alleged mastermind of serial blasts in Delhi [Images] and other cities who was killed in an encounter, took admission in Jamia Millia University in Delhi by allegedly using a fake degree certificate, the police claimed on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Azamgarh youth allegedly submitted a BSc degree certificate from Allahabad University for taking admission in a post-graduation course in human rights, Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh told PTI.

This came to light after police approached Allahabad University to verify the antecedents of Atif, who was killed during an encounter in his rented flat in Batla House in south-east Delhi's Jamia Nagar.

"The Allahabad University informed us that Atif was never a student and they had not issued any such certificate," Singh said.

Atif has allegedly produced a fake BSc degree (Physics, Chemistry, Maths stream) of 2004-07, he said.

When contacted, a senior Jamia Millia University official said they were yet to get any report from the police in this regard.

"We were never approached in this regard," the official said.

The Delhi police had claimed that Atif was the leader of a 13-member module of the Indian Mujahideen [Images], which carried out serial blasts in Delhi, Jaipur [Images], Gorakhpur and Uttar Pradesh [Images] courts.
