With the Centre facing the heat over terrorism, National Security Adviser M K Narayanan on Tuesday admitted that intelligence was 'not good enough' but claimed there were also successes like more terror attacks in the capital being nipped in the bud in the last two to three days.

"I admit that our intelligence (gathering) wasn't good enough. Our problem really is that how can we get 100 per cent success. Till then, I would regard that we have not achieved what we need to have," Narayanan said, as the United Progressive Alliance government grappled with ways to deal with the rise in terror strikes in the country.

At the same time, the top security official claimed that during the last two to three days authorities have succeeded in foiling attempts to strike in Delhi [Images].

"It is not that we have not achieved anything. There are several successes. I don't know whether we should advertise them the way you (media) want us to do," Narayanan said.

"I think there is a pretty good intelligence but obviously the intelligence is not good enough. Let me be honest to say that if we had that good intelligence, we could have prevented the incidents (terror strikes).... Every single incident of this kind technically means that the intelligence wasn't good enough," Narayanan said.

Discrepancies in IM's emails need to be studied

Narayanan's remarks came amid calls for setting up a unified intelligence agency for the country in an attempt to beef up the intelligence apparatus. Former President A P J Abdul Kalam also backed these calls recently and sought a greater role for citizens in such an agency.
