Congress president Sonia Gandhi [Images] on Saturday expressed shock over the bomb blast in Mehrauli, Delhi [Images], and condemned the attack while assuring the nation that all steps would be taken to root out terrorism from the country.

"The Congress president expresses shock and desires that immediate action should be taken to nab the culprits with firmness," a party release said in Delhi.

She deeply condemns the attack and reassures the nation that everything shall be done to root out terrorism from the country, it added.

Party spokesman Manish Tewari said investigations are on and those responsible for the blast will be brought to book.

Asked whether it was a terror attack, Tewari said the investigating agencies are probing it and the issue would become clear by Sunday.

"Let us not second guess the work of the investigating agencies and burden them with our theories," he said.

Responding to a query on the demand of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the resignation of Home Minister Shivraj Patil [Images], Tewari said in the fight against terror, the entire nation should stand united.

"They (BJP) are trying to score brownie political points on the issue. How many times did L K Advani [Images] resign. It is not that bomb blasts and terror acts did not take place when he was the home minister," the spokesman said.

On a question on whether the blasts could have been prevented had the Prevention of Terrorism [Images] Act been in place, Tewari said if making laws prevented such acts, then the terror attacks during the National Democratic Alliance's regime would not have taken place.

Asked whether an all-party meeting to discuss terror will be convened, Tewari said the prime minister is away and when he comes back all possible steps in this regard will be taken.

"It is the duty of the state to provide full security to every citizen," he added.
