Former deputy commissioner of police (detective) Ajay Kumar and two other police officers, included in the chargesheet in the Rizwanur Rahman death case, on Tuesday surrendered before a Kolkata court which sent them to 14 days' judicial custody.
The court rejected their bail applications, CBI counsel Partha Tapaswi said.
Apart from Kumar, the other two officers are former assistant commissioner of police (anti-rowdy section) Sukanti Chakraborty and Iinspector Krishnendu Das.
The CBI, which is investigating the case, as per the order of the Calcutta high court, had earlier filed a chargesheet in connection with the case. The three officers had been charged with criminal intimidation and conspiracy.
The CBI filed the charge sheet against the seven accused in the case including, industrialist Ashok Todi on September 22.
Rizwanur, a computer graphics teacher, had married Priyanka, daughter of Ashok Todi, on August 18, 2007, and began living with her at his Park Circus residence from August 21.
Rizwanur and Priyanka thereafter were summoned to the Kolkata police headquarters thrice allegedly at the behest of Todi and his relatives and she returned to her father's home on the third occasion on September 8.
A written assurance was given by Priyanka's uncle that she could return to her in-laws after a week.
But she did not. Rizwanur's body was found beside railway tracks at Patipukur in the northern outskirts of Kolkata on September 21, far away from his home.
The then commissioner of Kolkata police Prasun Mukherjee had in a press conference justified the police initiative.
This led to a furore and several cases in the high court were filed with Rizwanur's mother demanding a CBI probe into the death of her son.
The high court had late last year directed the CBI to investigate the cause of the youth's death. The CBI then filed an FIR on November 17, 2007, and after investigation told the high court in a report that Rizwanur had committed suicide.
