64 held for Jehanabad massacre

At least 64 people have so far been arrested in connection with last week's Laxmanpur-Bathe massacre in Jehanabad district of Bihar.

District Magistrate A K Singh said the property of 19 accused has been attached. He said 24 dependents of the victims were given appointment letters and the affected families have been provided with free ration for one month. Rs 10,000 has been given to the dependents of the deceased as ex-gratia, he added.

He claimed the situation in the village was returning to normal. The district magistrate, however, ruled out any land dispute behind the carnage and denied any prior information of the incident.

He said the Ranvir Sena committed the heinous crime to spread its tentacles in the district.
