Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov torched the Brazilian 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 and gained his second U.S. Open semifinal.

Kafelnikov dropped five sets in his first three matches but didn't drop any against No. 12 seed Arnaud Clement in the fourth round or against Kuerten in the quarters.

"I didn't want to have what happened at the French Open happen here. I had the match in my hands and was not able to close it out. Today was a different story," said Kafelnikov.
