Rushmi to meet Heli in ITF final
April 18, 2003 19:03 IST
India's Rushmi Chakravarthy and Heli Bargil of Israel won their semifinal matches in contrasting styles on Friday to set up the title clash at the Bhavana Swarup ITF Women's tennis tournament in Muzaffarnagar.
Rushmi won her match against Russian Julia Vorobieva in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 and Heli overcame a tough challenge from India's Archana Venkataramanan to prevail in three sets 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4).
The first semi-final between Rushmi and Julia saw the Indian lass winning the first set comfortably. Even though, Rushmi made a number of unforced errors in the second set, she managed to stay on top with some fine rallies and powerful forehands and take the match.
The second semis saw a mighty tussel between the Israeli and the Indian, both tried to dominate each other with a combination of placements and winners during the match which lasted three and a half hours.
However, Archana paid the price for a lapse in concentration and went on to lose the first set 7-5. The Indian girl bounced back to claim the second set in a tie-break but in the all-important third and deciding set, Heli came out tops in the tie-breaker to win the match and a place in the final.
