Tollygunge rally to hold Sporting Clube

January 15, 2005 21:54 IST

Tollygunge Agragami came from behind to hold Sporting Clube de Goa [Images] 3-3 in a first round match of the ninth National Football League, at the Nehru stadium in Goa on Saturday.

Sporting Clube, who dictated terms in the first half, led 1-0 at half-time through Wilton Gomes's 22nd minute goal.

They increased the lead after the change of ends through goals from Edeh Chidi (52nd minute) and Rajesh Meetei (78th minute).

But Tollygugne fought their way back in the second half and scored through Surjit Bose (63rd minute), and Sulay Musah and Akeem Abolanle in injury time to level scores.

Sporting Clube went on the offensive from the start with Dudu Omagbemi and Edeh Chidi combining well upfront as they made repeated forays into the rival half but were thwarted by the rival defenders.

Kabijit Khotal, Deb Kumar, Susmal and Isiaka defended well till the 22nd minute when Dudu made his way on the right flank and centered a low cross for to Wilton Gomes inside the box to do the rest.

Sporting had a chance to increase the lead in injury time of the first half but Dudu's header off Joseph's corner missed the mark narrowly.

Tollygunge, who made occasional forays into the rival half, had their chances of scoring but Akeem and Surjit were erratic.

Sporting continued to mount pressure in the second half and increased the lead in the 52nd minute through Edeh Chidi off a pass from Adabayo.

Tollygunge came off with counter moves and reduced the margin through Surjit Bose off Suley Musa's pass in the 63rd minute.

Sporting again piled the pressure and increased the lead through Rajesh Meetei off Wilton Gomes's pass.

Sporting, who were sitting pretty on their two-goals lea, however, took things lightly and Tollygunge took advantage of it to score twice in injury time through Sulay Musah and Akeem Abalole to draw parity and take a point from their away match.
