The ideals of the Olympic movement through the Asian Games were firmly bolstered at these Games, with considerable increase in numbers of participating countries/NOCs and participants. Although cycling was excluded, wrestling, boxing and shooting were added to bring the total number of disciplines to eight. Japan, who fielded the second largest contingent, dominated the Games and swept the board in athletics, swimming and wrestling. India's Parduman Singh acheived a unique double by winning the men's discus and shot-put competitions. Korea participated for the first time.
