South Korea were originally given the privilege of hosting sixth Asian Games. However, due to various political and financial factors, they informed of their inability to honour their commitment 16 months after the fifth edition of the Games. For a brief moment, the fate of the continent's now premier sporting event looked bleak. However, with the excitement of the previous Games still alive among the Thais, Bangkok came to the rescue and hosted its second Asian Games in succession. Most of the venues from the last Games were used again. Yachting made its debut. The Japanese continued its dominance, claiming 144 medals. South Korea finished with 54 while Thailand bagged 29 to end up third.
