There were 25 disciplines this time, with bowling, fencing, judo and taekwondo being added to the growing list. South Korea launched their preparations for the Olympic Games by topping the medals tally with 224 medals, two more than China. However, the Chinese won the gold medal race, winning 94 medals, one more than the Koreans. Japan slipped further down the rankings, placing third. India finished with 37 medals, including five gold. Four of those gold medals were won by India's sprint queen P T Usha. She won the women's 200 metres, 400 metres, 400 metres hurdles and 4x100 metres relay.
