It was, for the humble khadi, a much-overdue moment under the designer sun. As fashion house Melange tied up with the Morarka Centre for Crafts (National Centre for Performing Arts) and the Eicher art gallery and moulded the fabric of the
freedom movement to suit the tastes of a fashion-conscious public.

Six designers were cajoled and cosseted until they agreed to experiment with khadi. Sarah Eapen, lately married to cricketer Abey Kuruvilla, shuddered at the thought of making the stubborn fabric bend to her designer will. Sangeeta Khatiawad of Melange recalls, "Sarah was holidaying in Cochin, and she absolutely refused to return to Bombay if I did not get such crazy ideas out of my head."

Once the designers - Aki Narula, Sujit Mukherjee, Sarah Eapen, Ramesh Nair, Simran for Studio Melange and Aparna Chandra - decided to jump on the bandwagon, work progressed rapidly. The fabric was steeped, twisted, pummelled, coloured and tackled until it flowed in smooth, graceful lines and shimmering colour - in garments that any fashion conscious socialite would be glad to wear…

Rediff On The NeT brings you glimpses of the show that was held to commemorate this fabric, both as a fashion show (in MOV files) and a slide show. We must, however, issue a caution. The MOV files will take a little while to download…
