An explosion was reported at the corner of 19th Street and 6th Avenue early on Thursday afternoon. The area has been sealed off and investigations are on.
As of now, there are no details on the nature of the explosion. Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing a loud bang.
The blast occurred on the top floor of Apex Technical School, a trade school for adults, at 19th Street and 7th Avenue, Chelsea.
The area was showered with glass. Some 40-50 people have been reported injured, three of them seriously.
Preliminary reports say the explosion occurred in the boiler room.
Eyewitnesses said immediately following the explosion all the glass in the building blew out.
Over 100 fire fighters have reached the spot
As of now, there has been no suspension, diversion or stoppage of trains and vehicular traffic.
A teacher, who was in the building when the explosion took place, said there was a huge noise, then the building shook and glass flew out. He was at the time on the 8th floor taking a class.
One woman, who gave her name as Kate, said she was under the building on the 19th Street and heard a loud explosion. When she looked up she saw glass raining down from the building.
Kate said that the blast came from the top floors of the building. She walked away from the crowded intersection unscathed.
"I'm just going to go home," she said, wiping away tears.
The Apex Technical School has a total student base of around 804 -- 98.1 per cent men. Over 4 per cent of the student body is Asian.
